Death Notes:
East Lawn Funeral Home, Kingsport Tennessee:
Ralph Childress, 79, of Kingsport, passed away, Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, TN.
Mr. Childress was born May 29, 1929, a son of the late, Robert T. and Fannie Pearl (Gray) Childress.
He retired from the U.S. Postal service and was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Throughout his lifetime he also served as music director for several area Baptist churches.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Phyllis Harr Childress; second wife Gladys McAnich Childress; sisters, Leta Isley, Mary Childress and one brother Bruce Childress.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen McMurray and husband Stan of Johnson City, Donna Harlan and husband Lee of Johnson City and Alice FitzPatrick and husband Bob of Nashville; his grandchildren, Brian, Travis and Wesley McMurray, Katie Hall, Becky Harlan and Elizabeth FitzPatrick; five great-grandsons and two brothers, Robert Childress and wife Louise of Phoenix, AZ and Fred Childress and wife Louise of Norris, TN.

The following thoughts wre written by Donna Harlan, Daughter of Ralph Childress:
Trapped

When my younger daughter was two, she accidentally locked herself inside the car with my keys inside. She immediately began to wail. "It's okay. Calm down and push the same button you just pushed." It seemed like a simple solution, and I was sure that she would recover from her emotional overload, but it didn't happen. Other church members tried the same tactics that I had, but they were equally unsuccessful. When I realized there was no other solution, I called my husband who quickly brought the other set of keys and released her from her entrapment.
My father experienced an entrapment much like a door that is locked from one side, but there was no key and no button to push. Parkinson's locked him inside himself, trapped with emotions he couldn't express, determination that was doomed to fail, and a body that refused to move the way he wanted it to.
This is the way my sisters and I began the journey with my father, a man who changed rather quickly before our eyes into a different person. Most people are encouraging at the outset of disease. We heard, "Parkinson's is manageable. It won't kill you." In his case, this proved to be untrue. Our father was initially a healthy man who, in the end, lost his ability to swallow, which is a direct route to death. Although it was direct, it was also long and winding, with many ups and downs. Of course, this is a destination we all have in common, but our journeys to arrive there will all be different, and just as we like to hear stories about the travels of others, perhaps our story of this journey will allow you new insight, as it did us.
